If you live alone and have either a high temperature or a new continuous cough or develop a loss of taste or smell, do not leave your home for 7 days. If you live with other people, keep them at home for 14 days. To check if you need medical help, use the 111 coronavirus service.

Only call 111 if you cannot get help online. DO NOT go to your GP surgery, hospital or pharmacy.

We are aware of recent media coverage of a vaccination for coronavirus. When we have more information and when a vaccine does become available, please be assured that we will be in contact with you.

Antibiotics do not help, as they do not work against viruses. Treatment aims to relieve the symptoms while your body fights the illness. You'll need to stay in isolation, away from other people, until you have recovered.

If your symptoms worsen please contact 111 online or call 111. DO NOT ATTEND the practice or your pharmacy.

One of the ways we become infected, or pass on viruses to others, is through the droplets in coughs and sneezes – for instance through someone who has a virus, coughing onto their hand, then touching a door handle.

A simple and effective way to protect yourself and others from coronavirus is by making sure you use a tissue to catch your coughs and sneezes and wash your hands frequently with soap and water, or a hand sanitiser if you are out and about.

Look out for updates from Public Health England, the Department of Health and Social Care or the NHS who will let you know if and when there are any changes to who should self-isolate. If you need to self-isolate, please read this guidance as it will explain what you need to do.

There are a number of ways to slow down an infectious disease outbreak. Well-established tactics include self-isolation as well as measures sometimes referred to as “social distancing.”. Please take necessary actions regarding your work/study/travel following the guidelines of social distancing.

Now that COVID-19 is considered to be spreading in the community, this could mean the NHS is busier than usual so it’s important to think carefully about the NHS services you use.

If you start to experience symptoms and believe you could have coronavirus, do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital as you could pass the infection to others. Visit NHS 111 online or call NHS 111 if you need to speak to someone.

Services like 999 or Accident and Emergency should only be used for genuine emergencies.

According to the Department of Health - There is no need for you to do anything new or different when ordering or taking your medicines. Please order prescriptions and take your medicines as normal. Extra supplies should not be ordered from your doctor.

There are no prescription medicine shortages as a result of Covid-19. Stockpiling or purchasing medication that you do not need is completely unnecessary and could disadvantage other patients.

We have been made aware of some inaccurate information circulating regarding special ‘rescue packs’ for patients with pre-existing respiratory conditions such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Please do not contact your GP practice for a rescue pack. You should continue to manage your condition in the usual way and if you feel you have symptoms of COVID-19, go to https://111.nhs.uk/covid-19 before doing anything else.

You may be at high risk from coronavirus if you:

Solid organ transplant recipients.
People with specific cancers:
- people with cancer who are undergoing active chemotherapy or radical radiotherapy for lung cancer
- people with cancers of the blood or bone marrow such as leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma who are at any stage of treatment
- people having immunotherapy or other continuing antibody treatments for cancer
- people having other targeted cancer treatments which can affect the immune system, such as protein kinase inhibitors or PARP inhibitors
- people who have had bone marrow or stem cell transplants in the last 6 months, or who are still taking immunosuppressive drugs
People with severe respiratory conditions including all cystic fibrosis, severe asthma and severe COPD.
People with rare diseases and inborn errors of metabolism that significantly increase the risk of infections (such as SCID, homozygous sickle cell).
People on immunosuppression therapies sufficient to significantly increase risk of infection.
Women who are pregnant with significant heart disease, congenital or acquired.

The government has sent out letters and texts to patients they have identified as high risk. This of course is not going to be 100% accurate as they are using information from a variety of sources.

If you have one of the following conditions then you need to self-isolate for 12 weeks. If you do not suffer any of the conditions listed below, it would still be our advice to severely restrict your social interaction as much as possible, in line with the government nationwide ‘lockdown’. This is both to limit the spread of the virus and reduce your risk of exposure.

We understand that many of you may be anxious and worried about recent events. Please avoid calling the surgery regarding this query as our advice will be as above.

If you’re at high risk of getting seriously ill from coronavirus, there are extra things you should do to avoid catching it (known as ‘shielding’).

These include:

not leaving your home – you should not go out to do shopping, visit friends or family, or attend any gatherings
avoiding close contact with other people in your home as much as possible
When arranging food or medication deliveries, these should be left at the door to minimise contact
